Canadian History ...in a few Quotes

Early success is a terrible teacher. You're essentially being rewarded for a lack of preparation, so when you find yourself in a situation where you must prepare, you can't do it. You don't know how.

-Chris Hadfield, Commander of the International Space Station

Canada is a country strong not in spite of our differences but because of them.

-  Justin Trudeau, current P.M.

Next to trying and winning, the best thing is trying and failing.

— L.M. Montgomery, writer

A winner is a dreamer who never gives up.

-Nelson Mandela

I love this country. I love my idea of this country.

— Gord Downie, 2012

Teachers often have many rules and each teacher manages their own classroom according to their own philosophy. Some have many rules and some struggle with classroom management. You and I are both invested in your success and we are in this thing together.

Mr. Black's Classroom Rules

Be on time

Be prepared

Cells in locker or in pocket in class

Put the work in

Mr. Black's Teaching Philosophy

The rent is due everyday…my job is to collect. Your job is to be taught and to learn to be a better student. My job is to make sure you are successful by doing everything in my power

to help you achieve  your goals. You  might not like it but I am not here to be your friend. I am your teacher and I will support you

but you must meet me at least halfway.

The time we spend together is central to your success.

Don’t get mad at me for doing my job.

As the story goes Bill Gates was once asked what his 10 Rules for Life were....and what made him so successful.

In my 30 plus years of teaching the following are the 10 things I have found have worked really well for my students. Basically be a good person, be tolerant of others and put the work in.

Enjoy...and hopefully you can use a few of them. I try to follow them every day.

Mr. Black’s 10 Rules for Life

  1. Be a good human…and choose to be a good human everyday.

  2. Work…even when you think you can’t.

  3. Be nice to as many people as you can…you might work with or for them one day.

  4. Smile and have fun…everyday.

  5. Love what you do.

  6. Accept responsibility and own it. Most of the time it is your fault.

  7. Surround yourself with people who want you to succeed…and are invested in your success.

  8.  Be your best version of yourself…even when you think you can’t. It is at those times that you must.

  9. Take yourself out of your comfort zone..you might like it and find out you are good at it.

  10. Walk in someone else’s shoes…your view might not be the same.

Have a great year!
